What are nanofibers ?
While there is some discussion on the exact definition of a nanofiber, the consensus in the nonwovens industry has been that anything under 1 micron in diameter is a nanofiber. To put this in perspective, one nanometer is equivalent to one billionth of a meter, making nanofibers many orders of magnitude smaller than an average human hair
When compared to conventional fibers, nanofibers offer numerous advantages, most notably high surface area, small pore size and high pore volume. These characteristics lend themselves to many innovative applications including wound care, filtration, fuel cells and countless others.
What is Electrospinning ?
Electrospinning is a fiber production method which uses electric force to draw charged threads of polymer solutions or polymer melts up to fiber diameters in the order of some hundred nanometers. Electrospinning shares characteristics of both electrospraying and conventional solution dry spinning of fibers. The process does not require the use of coagulation chemistry or high temperatures to produce solid threads from solution. This makes the process particularly suited to the production of fibers using large and complex molecules. Electrospinning from molten precursors is also practiced; this method ensures that no solvent can be carried over into the final product.
What are the parameters that affect the process?
Solution Parameters: Viscosity, Concentration, Molecular weight, Surface tension, Solvent, Additives, Solution temperature.
Process Parameters: Applied voltage, Needle to collector distance, Flow rate, Spinneret geometry, Polarity.
Environment Parameters: Temperature, Humidity. (Thus we recommend to our customers when purchasing our devices to add the options of temperature and humidity controlled chamber)
What can I use Electrospinning for?
Why choose Needle-Based Technology over needleless?
-Less polymer volume to start the process
-The Ability to produce composite and bicomponent nanofibers
-Precise control of feeding rate
-Closed system for polymer feeding
-Changeable collector types and collection area
-Changeable process direction
